What Constitutes a Pediatric Dental Emergency?
Knowing when to seek emergency dental care is crucial. Some common pediatric dental emergencies include:
Knocked-Out Tooth: This is a time-sensitive emergency. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, immediate action can significantly increase the chances of saving it.
Severe Toothache: Intense, persistent tooth pain, especially when accompanied by swelling or fever, can indicate a serious infection.
Fractured or Broken Tooth: A cracked or broken tooth can be painful and may require immediate treatment to prevent further damage.
Object Lodged Between Teeth: If you cannot remove a foreign object stuck between your child’s teeth with gentle flossing, it’s important to seek professional help.
Significant Bleeding in the Mouth: Bleeding that doesn’t stop after applying gentle pressure for a reasonable amount of time warrants immediate attention.
Swelling in the Mouth or Face: Sudden swelling can be a sign of a serious infection that needs prompt treatment.
What to Do in a Pediatric Dental Emergency:
If your child experiences a dental emergency, remain calm and follow these steps:
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
Find the tooth, handle it by the crown (the white part), and gently rinse off any dirt (do not scrub). Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or your child’s saliva and bring it to our office immediately. Time is critical!
Severe Toothache
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water. You can apply a cold compress to the outside of their cheek. Do not place aspirin or any other painkiller directly on the gums. Contact our office right away.
Fractured or Broken Tooth
Gently rinse your child’s mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Try to find any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to our office.
Object Lodged Between Teeth
Gently try to remove the object with dental floss. Do not use sharp instruments. If you cannot remove it, contact our office.
Significant Bleeding
Apply firm but gentle pressure to the bleeding area with a clean gauze pad for 10-15 minutes. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, call our office immediately.
Swelling
Apply a cold compress to the swollen area and contact our office as soon as possible.
